Winter Lunch Series: Speaker Saskia Jones-Perrott (GH 1988-90)

Behind the Mask: Leading Through a Pandemic and Beyond

After leaving Blundell’s in 1990, Saskia Jones-Perrott nee Joyner, studied medicine at Oxford and London before embarking on a varied and dedicated career across 13 hospitals, ultimately becoming a Consultant in Respiratory and Acute General Medicine in 2007.

She led the Lung Cancer service, specialised in infectious diseases and tuberculosis, and worked extensively in medical education and junior doctor development. Saskia has also served as Student Welfare Officer for Keele Medical School since 2007.

In June 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she became Divisional Medical Director - taking on the challenge of leading through one of the greatest healthcare crises in living memory.

In this talk, Saskia reflects on her journey through professional medicine, the extraordinary team efforts of NHS staff during the pandemic, and how COVID transformed the working world - particularly for those in clinical leadership. She’ll explore the lasting impact of that time on the medical profession and the future of healthcare work in a post-pandemic world.
