Sir Christopher Ondaatje

We are deeply saddened by the death of Sir Christopher Ondaatje, financier, writer, Olympian, philanthropist and Old Blundellian, who was a member of Petergate from 1947 to 1951.
Born in Sri Lanka, Sir Christopher built a distinguished career in finance and publishing before returning to writing and producing several acclaimed books. He was appointed CBE and knighted in 2003 for his services to philanthropy.
A generous lifelong supporter of Blundell’s, Sir Christopher contributed to the School in many ways. Ondaatje Hall, named in recognition of his generosity, has been home to countless productions and generations of Blundellian performers.
Sir Christopher was a passionate cricketer and longstanding supporter of the Old Blundellian Cricket Club (OBCC). He established its annual fixture against Lynton and Lynmouth at the Valley of Rocks, which the OBCC continues to play to this day.
More recently, he made a generous donation to support a cricket scholarship at Blundell’s, enabling a talented young person to benefit from the School’s education and proud cricketing tradition.
His support for cricket also extended to Somerset County Cricket Club, where he funded the Ondaatje Pavilion and donated a box to the OBCC, which members continue to enjoy today.
His generosity and lifelong connection to Blundell’s will be remembered by the whole Blundell's community.
