From Head Girl to Red Rose
Old Blundellian Demelza Short Makes Her Mark on the International Stage
The Blundell’s community is celebrating the remarkable rise of Old Blundellian Demelza Short, who has made her senior debut for England Rugby and been rewarded for her continued progress with a new contract at Bristol Bears Women, another significant milestone in an inspiring journey.
Having left Blundell’s only last year as Head Girl, Demelza has made an extraordinary leap from school rugby to the highest level of the game. At just 19, she earned her first senior England cap in the Red Roses’ emphatic Women’s Six Nations victory over Scotland at Murrayfield, a proud moment for her family, former teammates, and the entire Blundell’s community.
Her international debut marks another chapter in a rapid rise that has seen her progress from representing England U18s while at Blundell’s to breaking into one of the most competitive squads in world rugby. Just days after her debut, Demelza’s outstanding potential was further recognised with a new deal at Bristol Bears, where coaches have praised her maturity, work ethic, and immense ceiling for growth.
For Blundell’s, Demelza’s success carries special significance. As Head Girl, she embodied the leadership, humility, and determination we seek to foster in our pupils, while her achievements on the rugby field made her a role model for younger players across the school.
Her journey from Blundell’s pitches to wearing the Red Rose is a powerful reflection of what can be achieved through talent, resilience, and ambition. It also underlines the strength of girls’ sport at Blundell’s and the pathways available to young athletes with the courage to dream big.
Everyone at Blundell’s sends Demelza our warmest congratulations as she continues her exciting journey with England and Bristol Bears. We could not be prouder to call her an Old Blundellian.
Director of Rugby, Tony Yapp said:
“Demelza has always combined exceptional talent with humility and determination. To see her progress from leading the school as Head Girl to representing England at senior level is incredibly special. She is a wonderful role model for our pupils.”
