Lockdown & Furlough

On behalf of the Development Office & Old Blundellian Club, we are wishing everyone a safe lockdown. We understand that you will be affected by another lockdown in many different ways and we are wishing everyone the very best during this challenging time.

The Development Office has also been affected with staff working from home, while others have been furloughed. We will be temporarily pausing the Popham Post until the Office is fully back up and running. However, we are delighted to confirm that the Telephone Campaign will be continuing over lockdown. You can sign up or nominate someone for a call by filling in the below form.

Virtual 1604 Legacy Society Event

We are planning to host our next Annual 1604 Legacy Event online this year (date TBC). The Society and its annual event provide an opportunity to thank members for their contribution whilst being given an update on the School by the Head.

We are excited to unveil a new lapel badge for all 1604 members at this next event. If you intend to leave a legacy to Blundell’s or indeed, have already done so, you are eligible for membership of the 1604 Society.

68th Alumni Cross Country Race

A record 12 Old Blundellians competed in this year’s virtual race. Fun in the mud was had by all, across the whole of the UK. The Ladies team came a very credible third overall in the ‘Old Johnian Cup’ and easily won the W45 category, while the Men’s M40 team came 7th out of 30 schools.

Giles Stimson (NC 1960-65), our de facto Alumni Cross County President was beaming with delight at his team’s best results. We will be doing it again next year, hopefully even faster and for those that cannot get to the Russell course this year we have plans for a virtual Russell Race.

If you would like to be added to the email mailing list for future Alumni Cross Country Races, please email the Development Office.

The Journey of the Blundell’s Colours Jacket

You may recall in a recent Popham Post that a Colours jacket was spotted for sale (£150!) in a stall in London by Lawrence Clarke (P 2017-19) (pictured). Janet Wooff kindly took up the challenge of tracking down the owner from the nametag inside and with the help of Lawrence, the jacket was reunited with its rightful owner, Derek Miles (OH 1949-52).

Derek was awarded his ‘Full Colours’ for shooting in the summer of 1952 as a member of the team who were awarded the Grand Aggregate Trophy at Bisley. The whole school turned out to welcome the team back and the Headmaster awarded a half day holiday in recognition!

The jacket was understood to be second-hand when purchased from the School Shop and although the original owner is unknown the quality of the material suggests it might have been made before the Second World War.

After leaving school Derek wore the jacket to various shooting events and even took it to West Africa on his first tour of duty in 1956-58. It is not known how the jacket made its way to the Vintage shop; however, Derek is delighted to be reunited with it.

Thank you to both Janet & Lawrence for helping to reunite the jacket with Derek.
