GEOGRAPHY

Geography is a very popular subject at both GCSE and A-Level at Blundell’s

In recent years, a good number of pupils have also chosen to study the subject at university, or related courses such as Geology, Oceanography, International Development, Rural Land Management, Environmental Science, Tourism Management, Surveying and Mapping and Agriculture. Recognised by the Russell Group universities as a facilitating subject, Geographers develop a wide range of skills during their time at school.

Ideally located as we are in the South-West, fieldwork is an integral part of our pupils’ learning experience. We run trips to Cheddar Gorge to observe the stunning stalactites and stalagmites located within the limestone caves and excursions to study the coastal geomorphology at Sidmouth and Dawlish. At Lyme Regis, the slope stabilisation scheme is viewed and assessed, while river management of the Exe is evaluated by A-Level pupils as it flows through Exeter. GCSE pupils visit the Temple Quarter scheme in Bristol and benefit from an educational boat trip along the River Avon. These pupils are also able to view recent regeneration schemes from a unique position as the river meanders through the city.

Geography helps pupils gain an understanding and appreciation of the world around us on a variety of scales. It is a robust academic subject that combines well with a range of other subjects from the arts to the sciences. Throughout, pupils study a fascinating combination of physical and human topics that interact to help shape the world in which we live.
