i/c Boys' Hockey: Mr AJ Coull (ajc@blundells.org)
Hockey for the boys is run in the Spring Term and is one of the options available to pupils in years 10 to 13, as well as soccer, cross-country, fives and squash. At present, in years’ 7, 8 and 9 small squads are selected to represent the school and the remainder do soccer instead. This enables us to build from the bottom up, introducing key skills and enthusiasm for the game early on. Therefore we run six teams in total:
U12 XI, U13 XI, U14 XI, U15 XI, 2nd XI and 1st XI.
The majority of the teams have three sessions of hockey per week, although these sometimes coincide with match days, which are on Wednesday and Saturdays. The senior squad are also expected to attend circuit training once a week.

As the Spring Term is a relatively short one (10 weeks), we aim to play at least one game per week, although we have recently increased our fixture list (as you will see from last season’s fixture card below), especially amongst the senior teams, and every effort is made to play opposition of a similar standard.
At Blundell’s we have a flood-lit Astroturf and, although the majority of our games take place on Astro, some junior sides do play on grass.
Before the start of the spring term, we run a 2-day pre-season training session for the senior squad, which usually involves a training match against another school. Last season we had a very successful day at Sherborne School playing Sherborne and Magdelen College, Oxford.
We have recently established a 1st squad 3-day tour to Guernsey which takes place at half-term.

The principal aims of the hockey at Blundell’s are to:
- Provide meaningful recreational activity.
- Provide coaching at all levels, even for those who fail to play in a team.
- Engender the spirit and discipline needed in a team game.
- Continue to play the sport in all weathers and times of day. This is achieved by using the Astro, which is equipped with floodlights.
- Enable senior pupils to assist with coaching, specifically those who wish to pursue hockey at a higher level.
- Provide a platform from which boys can move into County, Regional or National level.
Coaching is carried out by a dedicated and extremely enthusiastic group of staff.
