News

South West School's Championships

On Saturday 18th June six Blundell's athletes represented Devon at the South West Championships.

Grace Francis jumped well to narrowly miss a new PB in the inter Girls High Jump.

Karl Still ran well to finish 6th in a very fast paced Senior Boys 1500m.

Will Klinkenberg finished 5th in the Senior Boys Shot Putt.

Bertie Frankpitt finished 2nd in the Senior Boys 400m Hurdles.

Lucy Walliker finished 4th in the Senior Girls Triple Jump, jumping a new PB of 10.19m. She also jumped a new PB of 1.66m (National Entry Standard) to become South West Champion in the Senior Girls High Jump.

Trixie Nicholson threw 38.98m to become South West Champion (2nd year running) in the Inter Girls Javelin.

Following this, Lucy Walliker and Trixie Nicholson have both been selected to compete at the English Schools Championships in Gateshead on the 8th and 9th July.

Millfield Open Meeting

On Saturday 18th June our Year 9 and 10 athletes competed at an Open Meeting at Millfield. There were some good performances all round, with highlights coming from Luke Simpson (1st in 400m; 2nd in 100m and Shot), Rose Stanton (1st LJ), Will Spencer (1st 1500m), Mattie Hudson (2nd 200m), Amber Robertshaw (2nd TJ) and Rosa Matuzyck (2nd Discus).

Devon Schools Championships

On Saturday 11th June, several Blundellians competed at the Devon Schools Championships.

There were some excellent performances from Mattie Kolowska and Eve Nugent in the 200m and 800m respectively - both of which were extremely fast races.

Grace Labdon performed well in a very delayed Junior Girls shot, whilst Rose Stanton sat a new PB to finish 6th in the Junior Girls Long Jump.

Amber Robertshaw set a new PB to finish 5th in the Inter Girls Triple Jump, whilst Aran Dagwell-Spittle and Luke Simpson were both 3rd in the 100m and 400m respectively.

Trixie Nicholson threw over 42m to win the Inter Girls Javelin, whilst Lucy Walliker won the Senior Girls Triple Jump and was 2nd in the High Jump. Ben Clarke equalled his PB to finish 2nd in the Senior Boys High Jump, whilst Will Klikenberg and Bertie Frnapitt were crowned county champions in the Senior Boys Shot and 400m Hurdles respectively.

Exeter v East Devon Schools

Following the Exeter v East Devon schools match on the 26th May, the following pupils were selected to represent Exeter and East Devon at the Devon Schools on Saturday 11th June.

Track and Field Cup – Regional Final

At the regional final of the Track and Field Cup on 7th June the Inter Girls finished 4th, just 6 pts behind 2nd and the Junior Girls finished 5th - a great achievement.

Notable point scores in the Juniors came from Mattie Kolowska (31 points) and Maddy Cotton (32 points). Special mention must go to Mia Butterfield, who crossed the line in the 200m, despite pulling a muscle with 10m to go.

Notable point scores for the Inters came from Trixie Nicholson (54 points), Millie Attwell (43 points) and Roza Matuszkyk (37 points)

11 Schools Meeting – Millfield

Saturday 21st May saw as back at Millfield. Unfortunately, the weather gods were not acting in our favour and awful conditions meant PBs were not forthcoming. However, staff and students alike represented the school with huge effort and should be congratulated on their performance.

Prep School Competition – Blundell's

Friday 20th May saw us host our Annual Prep Schools Competition. Pupils from Mount Kelly, Maynard, Exeter Cathedral, St Peter's, Stover and Blundell's competed in age groups from Mini (Year 3) up to Open (Year 8). There were some excellent individual performances with records being broken in:

For Blundell's, wins from Freddie Mercer (1500m), Boris Ames (Hurdles), Leo Dummett (100m), Anna Maunder (800m), Eve Nugent (1500m) and Mia Butterfield (200m) helped to secure the Combined Open Trophy. In conjunction with the Prep School, Blundell's also won the Overall Trophy.

Open Meeting v Taunton, King's Taunton, King's Bruton

Saturday 14th May saw us attend an open meeting at Castle Track, with all age groups represented in the sunshine. Many pupils tried new events and a large number also helped officiate on Long Jump and Triple Jump, as well as moving hurdles, which we are extremely grateful for.

Senior Sports Day

Friday 13th May saw a rearranged sports day take place in the sun - perfect conditions for athletics. The competition was extremely close throughout the afternoon, with the winning houses only pulling away at the end.

  • Ben Oliphant-Thompson - Boys Shot (13.07m)
  • Lucy Walliker - Girls' HJ (1.61m)
  • Lucy Walliker - Girls' TJ (10.08m)
  • Alice Smith - Girls' Javelin (32.20m)

The Victor Ludorum was extremely close, with Karl Still pushing the eventual winner extremely close. However, this year the winner is Arthur Friend.

The Victrix Ludorum is Lucy Walliker.

Track and Field Cup

On Tuesday 10th May, Blundell's sent 4 teams to the Track and Field Cup competition. This was the Devon round of the National Competition - where every athlete has to do 2 events - gaining points for their team based on their time, height or distance.

The Junior Girls (Yr 7 and 8) finished 3rd, just 20 points behind first, with notable point scores coming from Mia Butterfield (34), Mattie Kolowska (32) and Maddy Cotton (32). Our internationally flavoured Junior Girls relay team (Mariia Karpova, Lou Voisin, Zoe Dare and Megan Benson) finished off the afternoon with a comprehensive victory in the relay.

The Junior Boys team finished 4th and some good performances were seen all round. Freddie Mercer ran another PB in the 800m (2m31) and other notable point scorers were Leo Dummett (33) and Alex Curtis (28).

The Inter Boys team (Yr 9 and 10) was comprised of many boys who usually play Cricket or do Swimming in the summer term. Despite some last minute changes, the team managed to finish 2nd, just 9 points behind the winners. Notable points scores came from Luke Simpson (41 points), Miles Lawler (35 points), Will Kennaugh (34 points), Jake Le Gassick, 32 points), and Josh Huggett (31 points). Liam Syed also scored 19 points in the 800m, running an excellent 2m14.

However, the Inter Girls finished performed superbly to win the competition and will now progress to the regional finals. Despite 2 of the team having finished 10 Tors on Sunday, the group competed brilliantly, with notable point scores coming from Trixie Nicholson (53 points) and Roza Matuszkyk (34 points).

Exeter Area Trials

A number of athletes from Year 7 to 10 attended Exeter Area Trials at Exeter Arena. There were some very good performances all round, and as a result, the following have been selected to represent Exeter Area Schools in a match v East Devon on Thursday 26th May.

The Year 7s who attended this event also performed to a very high standard with several gaining 1st or 2nd places. They will be discussed at a meeting on the 26th May and those successful will be selected to attend the Devon Schools' Championships on June 11th.

Super 8s at Millfield

Blundell's entered a Junior and a Senior Boys and Girls' team in the Super 8s at Millfield. In this event, a team is allowed 8 athletes who must perform a track, a field and a relay to gain points for the team. On a hot day, there were some notable individual performances:

Millfield Open Meeting

All girl athletes and boys up to Year 11 went to Millfield for an Open Meeting. There was some high quality athletics on show and our pupils performed well in their respective events.
