Science

The children have three 55-minute lessons a week at Key stage 2 (years 3-6). The curriculum follows the QCA’s guidelines with enhancements to suit the school's location. These include wildlife projects in the wildlife area, farm visits to local working farms, marine habitat studies with visits to the coast and the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, and fieldwork in the school's woodland and games fields. Every effort is made through the curriculum to relate the children to the world around them and how it works. The children are taught in a stimulating, hands on environment that encourages curiosity to evolve into understanding.

Year 6 enjoyed a ramble along the Grand Western Canal as part of a Science topic on foodwebs. A Canal Ranger led the group in looking at plant and animal life living in hedgerows along the canal, and all had great fun splashing through the mud on a Fungus Scavenger Hunt.

Mr Lee (a parent of a year 4 pupil) recently came in and presented an electricity workshop to Year 4. The children learnt about the different wires that carry electricity to our homes and around it. Also they learnt how a household circuit is wired up. All the children really enjoyed seeing science work in real life.

Sally Jackson, an Education Officer with 'Resource futures', recently ran a science workshop at Blundell's Prep. She ran the workshop in the science lab and covered topics such as mini beasts, recycling organic waste and a better environment for the future. The pictures show the sixth form looking through some organic compost from her garden for mini beasts and using a key to identify them.
