2006 1st XI squad
2006 1st XI squad

Captain of Girls' Hockey: Victoria Pouncey NC/W

Sherborne Tournament: The 1st Squad successfully retained the Sherborne U18 Trophy, which was just as well because we forgot to take it and left it behind in the Trophy Cabinet! All the matches were closely fought with low scores in the 10 minute-each-way format. However, with the defence only conceding one goal in five games, the girls got stronger and stronger and both the semi and final were won on flicks; v Canford 4-3 and in the final, having outplayed Sherborne Girls for most of the game, Birte Streit was magnificent in goal saving four flicks. The U15 Squad made a valiant effort to retain their trophy for the fourth time, losing in the semi-finals to Leweston 0-1. They had beaten King's Taunton and the eventual winners, Sherborne Girls, in the pool matches.

Devon U18 Champions (again!): The U18 squad successfully defended their County title at Exeter University and they now progress the West Finals. They had a relatively smooth passage and did not concede a goal. They overcame Colyton Grammar, West Buckland, Exeter School and Maynards before securing the clean sweep by beating Ivybridge Academy 2-0. The last game saw the debut of Mr Turner as team coach (Mrs K having had to leave early), but despite his nerves the team did not let him down; although the game was described as 'rather frantic'! The U18s finished a slightly disappointing 6th in the West finals. They were rarely outplayed and their general fitness and attitude were excellent but they got on the wrong side of four 1-0 defeats.

Devon U14 Champions: The U14s won their Devon Tournament for the first time ever (to be fair we have not always entered this age group), even so it was a very encouraging performance. In the finals a clean sweep of victories was recorded over the other area winners, Torquay Grammar, Holsworthy, Colyton Grammar and Mount House. They will get their first taste of the next level up on Sunday 26th November when they will go to the West of England Finals. To finish 3rd in the West of England finals was a fantastic achievement. Their only loss was to the eventual winners Millfield and they finished ahead of both Dean Close and Clifton - many people commented on their fast and flowing style of hockey and this bodes well for future campaigns. The U14 Squad: Amy Woodruff (Capt'), Laura MacBean, Steph McKelvey, Lauren Mitchell, Zoe Curnow, Emily Turner, Tory Margesson, Sarah Malcolm, Bea Dart, Charley Preston, Alice Dawson, Sophie Birchmore, Jess Mudge, Tessa Lomas and Lydia Ferris.

Devon U18 Indoor Champions: the U18s emulated last years' team by completing the double as winners of both the Devon Indoor and Outdoor tournaments. Their vanquished adversaries this time were Exeter School, ISCA Hockey Club, Exmouth Hockey Club and Riverside Hockey Club. Jo Mardell led the way with a total of 4 goals, closely followed by Hannah Bazley with 3. They go on to the West of England Finals on 3rd December. The U18s finished 5th in the West finals having beaten Taunton School 6-0 and St Mary's 10-0 they slipped up against Exeter, having dominated the game, and so just failed to make the semis.

U16s Runners-up in Devon Indoor Finals: The U16s qualified for the West of England Finals by finishing as runners-up in the Indoor finals. They defeated Exmouth Hockey Club and Exeter School before drawing 1-1 with Riverside Hockey Club. They then lost a closely fought encounter with the eventual winners, ISCA Hockey Club. The West Indoor Finals are at Cheltenham Ladies on January 14th 2007. The squad were Rosie Le Page (Capt'), Loiuse Youngman, Bess Menheneott, Sophie Anderson, Natalie Waddington, Lily Swan, Jess Horne, Georgie Hunt and Amy Woodruff. In January, the squad came very close to the National Finals. They beat Taunton School and St Mary's and a draw with Clifton HC saw them into the semi-finals against Millfield. Having looked much the better side they went 1-0 up and then squandered several more chances, before going down 2-1 in the dying minutes to finish in 3rd place.
