Captain of Golf 2003: Dougal Lyon FH

School v OBs, May 2003 at Tiverton Golf Club

Simon Waddington's team continue to have a stranglehold on this fixture and it is hard to see how the pupils are ever going to reverse the overall result. The morning foursomes was won by Martyn Grose and George Lyon; the latter making an impressive debut for the pupil team. The usual generous roast lunch fortified everyone and the serious business of the singles, looked on paper anyway, to be a interesting contest. However, yet again the experienced OBs triumphed convincingly 8 to 2, although many of the matches were keenly fought. Special mention must be made to Alex Howe, who, playing off 11, defeated Simon Waddington 2 and 1. As most of Devon knows, Simon does not lose very often, particularly around his beloved home course! The only other victory for the pupils was secured by George Lyon and in doing so upstaged his brother, who captained the side in exemplary fashion (off the course, at least!).

Several OBs commented on how well the pupils had conducted themselves both on and off the course and what good company they were, which is always welcome news - however, we have already started plotting and formulating our campaign for next year as to just how we are going to win (politely or otherwise!). Congatulations go to Alex Howe OH and Captain of Golf Dougal Lyon FH, who both tasted victory over half term. Alex won the Devon County Junior Golf Society's 36 hole handicap competition at Yelverton with rounds of 63 nett (75 gross) and 67 (79) for a total of 130. This has brought about a handicap cut from 12 to 9.6. Dougal won the Richardson's Cup at Tiverton with a 63 nett (82 gross) and he should see his handicap sliced from 19 to 15 or 16.

Autumn 2003 Update: Alex Howe (8), Dougal Lyon (9) and Robert Parker (9) have all continued to win over the Summer holidays and for the first time for a while there may be selection problems for next year!
