Captain of Golf 2002: Dougal Lyon FH

School v OBs, May 2002, at Tiverton Golf Club

Once again Simon Waddington M 71-75 fielded an impressive line-up of OBs who clearly have more time to play the game than the poor examination-beriddled pupils of today! Golf is certainly a game where experience counts for a great deal and the OBs used all at their disposal to triumph by 6½ to 3½.

This event is probably the highlight of the calendar for the golfing pupils and I am extremely grateful to the eleven OBs who entertained the boys so selflessly; some had travelled several hours to make the event (sadly no girls in the school line-up this year - all the OBs were keen to play Meike Ziegler NC 99-01 again, even those that she had beaten! I can't think why!). The excellent lunch at the club saw the OBs, yet again, attempting to soften up their opponents by plying them with dubious beverages - what is Kümmel anyway?

The winners of the Foursomes in the morning were Cedric Clapp and Kerry Brown. The latter playing most respectably considering that he was still in bed when the mini-bus was leaving school to get to the course!

Golf group

In the all-important OBs v Staff match, Simon Waddington and Nick Swarbrick secured a keenly fought half against Peter Klinkenberg (Registrar and Master i/c golf) and Norman Ridgway (House Master FH, Director of Sport, Master i/c Rugby, Athletics). We were also delighted that the President of the OB Golf Society, William Moberly OH  52-56, was able to attend despite being unable to play owing to an injury. PGK
