Football 2002/03

This has been one of the most memorable seasons at Blundell’s. Each year group played at least eight games, with the newly formed Colts (u16) team enjoying a fine run and the 1st XI remaining unbeaten.

1st XI Football: Unbeaten!

Played 8; Won 6; Drawn 2; Lost 0; Goals For 30; Goals Against 10

This season is the first I can recall where we have genuine depth at 1st XI level, with a squad of fifteen players competing for a place in the starting line-up. Many of the senior players have come of age this term and they have exuded great authority. They have played with confidence, commitment and spirit, and the team has shown great fluidity in its performances.

As a reflection of the development of football at Blundell’s, the Old Boys returned yet again with a strong squad.  This match is growing in stature and provides an excellent opportunity to develop the squad, particularly looking at some of the younger players.  The match served to kick-start a fine first half of term, with victories over both Clifton College and East Devon College clearly demonstrating the improved level of performance this year.

Post half term, we overcame a potentially difficult trip to King’s Bruton. However, one of the most outstanding performances was the draw at Millfield, where we demonstrated true Blundellian spirit. The final game in our unbeaten run further illustrated the depth of talent we have in the school. With a starting line-up containing only five regular 1st XI players we produced some fast flowing football and showed resolute defence. Indeed, three members of the U16 squad slotted into the 1sts with great effect.

In all, this has been an outstanding season for the 1st team, where we have performed at the highest level to date. Both Andrew Slucky (Cpt.) and Tom Bazley (v.Cpt.) lead by example, with the senior players offering them great support throughout.
