Norovirus, or Winter Vomiting Virus
As you may have heard in the news, the Norovirus, or Winter Vomiting Virus, is spreading through the country. The virus causes sudden and sometimes violent vomiting and diarrhoea, a raised temperature, headaches and aching limbs. It is affecting over 100,000 people a week with the number of cases set to peak in January. Although it is not yet a significant problem at Blundell’s we are concerned about its possible impact.
Norovirus is highly infectious, difficult to control and long-lasting. It is easily transmitted from one person to another; by consuming contaminated food or water, or by contact with contaminated surfaces or objects. Although the illness is short lived and normally resolves itself over 24/48 hours, people can remain contagious for up to two weeks. Therefore, simple precautions such as meticulous hand washing and other hygienic practices are vital.
If your child falls ill please ensure that you do not return them to school for 48 Hours after the last episode of diarrhoea or vomiting. If in doubt, please do not hesitate to seek advice from Blundell’s Sanatorium (Tel: 01884 232422).
Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.
