13+ Music Scholarships

Music plays an integral part of life at Blundell’s and there are many opportunities for musical pupils.  In the Senior School there is an abundance of opportunity to perform in various ensembles, including Orchestra, Big Band, Saxophone Quintet, Flute Choir, chamber ensembles, Brass Group, String Ensemble and Quartets and Trios, Choir and  Chamber Choir. We cater for all musical interests and abilities, be it classical, folk, rock, pop, jazz or world music.  There are many concerts both formal and informal, where all musicians have the opportunity to perform before an audience of parents and supportive friends.  There are also major public concerts each year in prestigious venues, including recently at Exeter Cathedral, Bath Abbey and St Georges Bristol.

The recent extension to the Music School has greatly enhanced the facilities for both performing and recording musicians; we now have two Mac composition suites and a Recording Studio as well as 12 practice rooms each with a piano. Pupils are able to have lessons in a wide range of instruments including piano, organ, all orchestral and jazz instruments, percussion, acoustic and electric guitar, and singing. There are over 300 music lessons a week at Blundell’s, and the department is a thriving and creatively stimulating environment.

There are international trips each year, including recent Choir tours to trips to Barcelona, Prague, Venice and Paris and an annual Big Band tours. Every opportunity is taken to ensure that our music award holders thrive in a dynamic department committed to creativity, enthusiasm and excellence where fun and enjoyment is coupled with musical excellence.

Selection Procedure

Candidates will be selected based on their performance(s) on the music scholarship day, in addition to their interview with the Director of Music. Please provide a copy of the music score for our accompanist three weeks before the exam. External candidates who are not entered for the academic scholarships must also satisfy the entry requirements by sitting Common Entrance at their Preparatory School, or the Blundell’s Entry Test (Mathematics and English).

Successful Candidates

Music and Choral awards are offered to candidates who excel practically and show promise and passion.  Candidates may offer as many instruments as they wish, and offering two or more is encouraged, although by no means essential.  For the sake of clarity, the voice is regarded as an instrument.  It is expected that the standard of pieces and technical requirements will be to at least Grade 5 according to the Associated Board, however, Blundell’s is primarily looking for musical potential and lower grades will be considered. Music Scholars are expected to make a valuable contribution to the musical life of the School by playing in at least one large ensemble as an instrumentalist and singing in the Choir.

Choral Scholars are expected to sing in the Chamber Choir and partake in liturgical music in internal and external services.  We are looking for pupils who have a real passion for music coupled with an impressive talent; they will be committed to being involved in musical events in the School as well as at major venues in the South West and beyond.

Our music award holders take a leading role in many areas, and have the opportunity of rehearsing or leading groups. We strongly encourage them to contribute ideas to be pursued and developed in the department.  Each Scholar has a tailor made programme to encourage their music making to flourish to the highest level.  This may include extra musicianship classes, chamber music rehearsals and masterclasses.

Value of Awards

The value of these awards is up to 30% of the chosen entry designation.
