Modern Languages GCSE

Our policy is that all pupils at Blundell's study a foreign language to GCSE level. We believe that it is important to meet the ever increasing need in our multilingual world for people who are competent in more than one language. Language learning develops many skills, not just in the sphere of communication. We are well equipped in a wealth of modern resources to practise the skills areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing and we aim to make creative use of ICT facilities. Pupils are prepared for the Cambridge iGCSE exam board at GCSE in all languages.

In Year 10, pupils are offered the opportunity to continue with French and their second language or to continue with one language only, French, German or Spanish. French will continue to be studied by majority and able linguist are actively encouraged to take the double language option.

Each language has 4 timetabled lessons of 40 minutes a week.

We use Encore Tricolore Total 4 books for years 10 and 11 French. The German text book is Michel Thomas and Lernpunkt Deutsch and the Spanish Cambridge iGCSE. These are both supplemented by other resources.

Examination & Assessment Information

The syllabus content is organised around five broad Topic areas which provide contexts for the acquisition of vocabulary and the study of grammar and structures. Through the study of these Topic areas, candidates gain insight into target language countries and communities.

The Topic areas are:

  • Everyday activities
  • Personal and social life
  • The world around us
  • The world of work
  • The international world

Paper 1: Listening - approximately 45 minutes
- Candidates listen to a number of recordings and answer questions testing comprehension.

- Externally assessed
Paper 2: Reading - 1 hour
- Candidates read a number of texts and answer questions testing comprehension.
- 45 marks
- Externally assessed
Paper 3: Speaking - approximately 15 minutes
- Candidates complete two role plays, a topic presentation/conversation and a general conversation.
- 100 marks
- Internally assessed/externally moderated
Paper 4: Writing - 1 hour
- Candidates respond in the target language to three tasks.
- 50 marks
