Trips

The History Department is pleased to offer a range of trips across age groups to supplement their studies in the classroom. These include trips to Torrington (Year 8), the annual trip to the First World War Battlefields of France and Belgium (Year 9), the Imperials War Museum (Sixth Form) and a 6-day visit to Italy (Sixth Form). This year the department also took the Sixth Form to the Chalke Valley History Festival for the first time – eminent historians spoke on topics of their expertise, exposing our pupils to a variety of topics. The department is currently planning to take the Sixth Form to America in the Easter of 2016.

Speakers

Freddie KnollerThe department has also been pleased to host various speakers, including Auschwitz survivor Freddie Knoeller. Professor Richard CarwardineThe entire school was enthralled by the amazing story of an Auschwitz survivor, and we were privileged indeed that Freddie was, once again, prepared to travel all the way to Devon to share his experiences. At the ripe old age of ninety, Freddie’s zest for life shows no sign of abating.

More recently the department welcomed Professor Richard Carwardine from Oxford University who gave an engaging and enlightening talk to Sixth Form historians on Abraham Lincoln.
