History Society and Trips
The Blundell’s School History Society organises a range of trips and events over the course of each academic year. 2010-2011 was particularly busy, with events organised across the age range.
- Year 8 went to a Civil War re-enactment site at Torrington in June.
- Year 9 travelled to Ypres and the Somme for the annual battlefields trip. As always, this was a moving experience, involving visits to both British and German war cemeteries, important battlefield sites, and attendance at the Last Post ceremony in Ypres. The group also endeavoured to track down the graves of various old Blundellians who lost their lives in the First World War. As a new addition to the trip this year, we also enjoyed an afternoon in the historic city of Bruges.
- The highlight of the year was the sixth-form trip to Rome and the Bay of Naples, which took place during the Easter holidays. The first port of call was Rome, where we visited many of the key historical sites spanning three millennia. Following this, we travelled by coach to the Bay of Naples, where we visited notable sites such as Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius and Sorrento.
- The Lower Sixth also visited Wells Cathedral and Glastonbury Abbey in October.

Freddie Knoller Talk
In addition to these trips, we were delighted to welcome back Mr Freddie Knoller in March. The entire school was enthralled by the amazing story of an Auschwitz survivor, and we were privileged indeed that Freddie was, once again, prepared to travel all the way to Devon to share his experiences. At the ripe old age of ninety, Freddie’s zest for life shows no sign of abating.
