History GCSE

There was a major change to GCSE in 2009 and the History Department has decided to adapt to this change by introducing an entirely new programme of study. We have chosen the Edexcel Modern World History course, which concentrates on a variety of global issues between 1919 and 1980. The syllabus begins with a detailed study of the peace treaties following World War One, followed by an examination of the collapse of world peace by 1939. Thereafter, pupils focus on Weimar and Nazi Germany (1918-1939), followed by a study of the USA between 1945 and 1980. To complement this study of domestic America, pupils also study the Cold War, including a detailed examination of important flashpoints in Berlin, Cuba and Prague. The Controlled Assessment component focuses on the transformation of British Society between 1939 and 1950. The course provides a fascinating, and important, insight into the twentieth century world, and is thoroughly recommended to all those with an interest in global affairs.
