English as a Foreign Language

Blundell's EFL Department works to the requirements of each pupil. Teaching on a one to one or small group basis is given in addition to the main curriculum. In order to attend as much of the normal timetable as is possible, pupils entering Blundell's are expected to have a firm foundation of basic English skills; there is no provision for total beginners. Help with specialised vocabulary and terminology is always available, even outside timetabled lessons. The Department also offers preparation and entrance for the University of Cambridge (UCLES) English Examinations, the IELTS and TOEFL Examinations.

The EFL Department has its own teaching block close to the centre of the School, where overseas pupils can drop in at anytime. We aim to create a calm, personal and caring environment, offering a base from which new pupils venture out into the main school. The School has a policy of limiting the number of pupils from any one country, which encourages everyone to become fully integrated into life at Blundell's. Blundellians, by nature, are wonderfully tolerant of each other's interests and nationalities, tending to enjoy the cultural diversity that overseas pupils bring to their school. Pupils gradually reduce their EFL lessons as they grow in confidence but they frequently drop by for a friendly chat, even when they no longer need our support.
