Drama Gifted & Talented

The drama department prides itself on the provision it makes for gifted and talented students. Gifted and Talented covers a wide range of very different skills in the Drama Department. DramaStudents may be gifted in any one of the following areas:

  • Acting
  • Directing others
  • Designing stage lighting
  • Designing sound effects
  • Designing costumes
  • Designing set

For each of these skills the drama department provides support both within and outside the main school curriculum. In Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils have the opportunity of taking part in the ‘Building Bridges Partnership’ which provides specialist workshops and weekend residential courses. In later years the following opportunities are available:

A pupil who is talented at acting:

  • Will be given the opportunity to excel within the classroom by being given roles which extend their acting ability and by the direction of a skilled member of staff that encourages them to go beyond their own boundaries and expectations.
  •  Will be encouraged to take part in school productions and to audition for companies outside the school. In the past students have joined the National Youth Theatre and the Northcott theatre and Taunton theatre companies.
  • Will also be given the opportunity to work with professional actors in workshops and to see professional productions both in the school theatre and in outside venues.
  • Will be encouraged to take LAMDA lessons where this is felt to be appropriate.
  • Professionals from the world of theatre are sometimes invited to talk to students and to offer comments on their work.
  • Students are given individual tuition by the Head of Drama in preparation for auditions

A pupil who is talented at directing:

  • Will be encouraged to take on the role of director in classroom situations and will be guided to a deeper understanding of that role through the study of other directors and through the experience of practical tasks
  • Will be given the opportunity to direct house plays and to help direct other school productions with the assistance of a member of staff
  •  will be encouraged to take on the role of director in the final unit 5 assignment at A level  

DramaThe pupil who is talented at lighting:

  • Will be given teaching from a lighting specialist at GCSE, AS and A level.
  • Will be encouraged to join the stage crew
  • Will have the opportunity of working with professional lighting designers from visiting companies   
  • Will have the opportunity to do work experience at theatres in Exeter or Taunton      

The pupil who is talented at sound design:

  • Will be given teaching from a sound specialist at GCSE, AS and A level.
  • Will have the opportunity of working with professional sound designers from visiting companies
  • Will encouraged to join the stage crew
  • Will have the opportunity to do work experience at theatres in Exeter or Taunton

The pupil who is talented at costume design:

  • Will be given teaching from a costume specialist at GCSE, AS and A level.
  • Will be encouraged to help costume school productions
  • Will be given the opportunity of visiting a professional wardrobe of a major theatre company.

The pupil who is talented at set design:

  • Will be given teaching from a set design specialist at GCSE, AS and A level.
  • Will be encouraged to help in the design process for school productions
  • Will encouraged to join the stage crew
  • Will have the opportunity to do work experience at theatres in Exeter or Taunton                                       

The success of this approach has meant that in recent years pupils been selected to take part in the National student drama festival in Scarborough and have been awarded scholarships to drama schools for both acting and technical theatre.
