GCSE Sciences

Biology | Chemistry | Physics

In September 2006, the GCSE Sciences structure changed. Now each GCSE science has three external papers of length 45 minutes (Units 1, 2 & 3), as well as one internal practical assessment test per science subject. Blundell’s has adopted the AQA B Separate Science GCSEs of Biology 4411, Chemistry 4421 & Physics 4451.  Further details regarding the AQA specification content can be found on their website, www.aqa.org.uk.

Within the science department, we are currently teaching the Unit 1 content to all Y9, giving them a ‘head start’ with this new course. The Unit 2 & 3 content will be taught in Y10 & Y11. This will provide ample time to consolidate their understanding of all three units.

The new modular system enables greater flexibility regarding examination, as units can be taken in Y10 and retakes, if required, are available again in Y11. With this in mind, all Y10 pupils will be entered for Unit 1 in June, in their respective science GCSE. This we believe is advantageous, as they will have an ideal opportunity to reduce the examination burden from Y11, as well as gain valuable external examination experience. Should they be disappointed with their result, an appropriate decision can be made regarding the value of retaking this unit again in Y11.  Clearly, it is our intention that they achieve their best mark at the first sitting.

We believe this new structure will provide pupils with the opportunity to realise their GCSE potential in the sciences and extend them beyond the specification content to ensure sound progression to A level.
