A-Level Product Design
The natural succession to either Resistant Materials or Graphic Products is A-level Product Design (AQA). The course is split into 4 Units. Two units are completed in year 12 and Two in year 13. This is a new specification which started in September 2008 for the first time.
Year 12
Unit 1 (PD1D): Written paper (2 hours) (50% of AS) – content is based on materials and components and application. Limited response style questions combined with slightly longer ‘essay’ style questions.
Unit 2 (PDN2): Coursework Project (50% of AS). A design and make project or portfolio of projects of the candidate’s choice.
Year 13
Unit 3 (PD3D): Written paper (2 hours) (50% of A2) based on design and manufacturing issues.
Unit 4 (PDN4): Coursework Project (50% of A2). A design and make project of the candidates choice.
Retakes
Unit 1 can be retaken up to 2 times in the A2 year
In year 12 and 13 the coursework units are completed within the first two terms. The choice of coursework is entirely the student’s choice. As long as the project is achievable in the school workshops, can be completed in the time available and within the pupils budget then it can go ahead. This allows for pupils to pursue their own individual passions and interests. Some recent coursework is shown below.
